Weave is a bottom-up cross-European initiative developed by European research funders to support excellent collaborative research projects across borders. It brings together 12 national and regional research funders, with the possibility to enlarge the network to include other funders in the future.
It aims to simplify the submission and selection procedures of collaborative research proposals involving researchers from up to three European countries or regions, through a single evaluation procedure.
Weave aims to make it easier for researchers to collaborate across borders, following simplified submission processes. Researchers will also be able to collaborate with their peers in countries where so far no cross-border funding agreements exists.
Weave is based on the Lead Agency Procedure. The funder that receives the proposal (the Lead Agency) evaluates it according to its internal rules set out for its respective national or regional programme. The funding recommendation is then communicated to the other funders (the Partner Agencies), for approval and budgetary purposes.
The team of researchers determine a coordinating applicant, who submits the joint proposal to the respective Weave funding organisation in their own country or region. The other applicants (co-applicants) then have to submit a copy of the proposal to their respective funding agencies (Partner Agencies).
Weave makes use of existing funding programmes. Research projects are funded through national or regional research programmes that are managed by Weave signatories. Researchers are financed by the funders for whose support they are eligible. Funders will only provide funding within their national or regional borders
Weave members work with Science Europe to leverage their collective resources and shape the best possible conditions for collaborative scientific research.
